So, you’re in the market for an engagement
ring – congratulations! We don’t know your girlfriend, but we’re sure that
she’s going to be ecstatic when you ask her to marry you. Likewise, we’re sure that
she’ll be positively giddy over the ring you choose. The selection process can
be daunting– we get, you guys don’t know anything about jewellery – which is
why we’re here to give you the facts!
Some men struggle whether to know whether
their girlfriend wants something more classic, like a diamond, or something
more unique. What we can tell you is this – 90% of engagement rings feature a
diamond and sapphires
are the second most common gemstone chosen. These are also the hardest gemstone,
which means they’ll hold up well to everyday wear and tear.
a Gemstone Shape
Diamonds are cut into 10 standard, but
easily the most common is round (which accounts for 75%). This is part of the
reason that round diamonds cost more than other shapes – you can actually save
up to 40% by choosing a non-round stone. Some other shapes that are also quite
popular, but less pricey, are the princess cut and the cushion cut.
a Precious Metal
Although there are a few metal choices, the
most common are platinum, white gold, yellow gold and rose gold.
Of these, platinum and white gold are by far the most popular. These two metals
do look very similar, but platinum is the more durable choice (as such, it
costs about 50% more). To get an idea of what metal your girlfriend likes, look
at jewellery she currently wears.
Would your girlfriend prefer something
sleek and modern or more detailed and vintage in feel? Something covered in
diamonds or more understated? Choosing a setting and engagement ring style can
be the hardest part of the whole process. To get an idea of what she might
like, think about the clothes she wears, the art she likes, the furniture she
owns and so on.
There really is no hard and fast rule for how
much you should spend on an engagement ring, other than that you should
spend what feels comfortable to you. A good jeweller will be able to help you
find a diamond or other gemstone that strikes the perfect balance between
quality at a price that works within your budget. They will discuss all of your
Determining your girlfriend’s ring size
without asking can be tricky, but it is doable. You could borrow a ring from
her jewellery box and take it to a jeweller to have it sized, or you could
trace it onto a piece of paper and do the same thing if she’s like to miss the
piece. You could also try asking one of her friends, as girls are prone to
discussing these sorts of things with each other!
